Mastery

Way of the Saint:
The Forgotten Relationship Between Medicine, Mysticism, and Martial Arts

Softcover: $28.95

Hardcover: $34.95

Way of the Saint chronicles the apprenticeship of a young Chinese American who
finds his way to the door of Gong Baozai, guardian of a life-practice system based
on eight trigrams and the philosophy of Change. Michael’s travels bring him face to
face with many teachers, among them Yang Shouzhong, patriarch of the Yang-style tai
ji quan lineage. Yet it is Gong Baozai who revels that traditional Chinese values
have not become fixed with the Yellow Emperor, Confucius, Laozi, or Buddha, but
continue to evolve with the modern world. With survival of the sacred medicine
transmission at stake, the aging master assigns Michael to instruct women in a bid
to keep the secrets alive.

The only difference between the hoodlum and the saint is that one on the path
of sainthood is in constant search for the answer to the basic reason for living.
The saint is not willing, as is the hoodlum, to stop short and apply his intelligence
and decisive discrimination only towards the attainment of material ends.

-Gong Baozai

Ba Gua Quan: Eight Trigrams "Fist":
Pao Chui and Practical Applications

Price: $24.95

Made public in the 1800′s, ba gua quan is the last of the four great martial arts
schools to emerge in China. A synthesis of the essence of scholar-warrior traditions
that precede it, the method of training is divided into two parts. The external training aspect is called Eight Trigrams Fist; the internal cultivation aspect is called Eight Trigrams Palm.

A companion to Ba Gua Zhang: Eight Trigrams Palm, this first instructional book ever published on cannon fist (pao chui) reveals hidden dimensions of Yin Fu ba gua quan’s main external training form. Embodied within pao chui’s sixty-four movements is the entire range of principles and techniques making up the framework of the system. Performing the postures integrates mind and body as it activates the internal organs associated with the eight trigrams. As a blend of martial arts, yoga, Chinese medicine, and principles of the I Ching, or Book of Changes, this form is deeply energizing.

Step-by-step illustrated instructions are given for the complete pao chui form as well as sixteen practical fighting applications.

Yin Fu Style Ba Gua Quan: Essential Guide

Price: $19.95

In the old days, it would have been an act of betrayal to reveal the role that character plays in the attainment of total mastery. The vital dynamics of the master-disciple and disciple-disciple relationships were hidden. All that was publicly taught were ritualized forms and techniques, with the full substance and spirit of a system kept secret. The degree of trust and intimacy between master and disciple was the greatest factor determining how much of a master’s transmission was conveyed.

This work discloses detailed elements of character relationships with the Ba Gua Quan, or Eight Trigrams Boxing, tradition transmitted by Grand Master Gong Baozai. The curriculum presented brings these relationships to the forefront by outlining technical requirements for rank advancement in the Yin Fu ba gua quan system, along with parallel stages of character development that must accompany each technical step for physical mastery to be complete. Additionally, the book offers an excellent model for teachers from other disciplines seeking to incorporate character and spirituality more fully into their curriculums.
